Snow Leopard and QuickTime

December 21, 2009 by Smoothape No Comments »

Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard includes QuickTime X which comes with a new QuickTime Player, offering a clean and uncluttered interface, easy media sharing, and flexible recording capabilities.

Should you need it, a Snow Leopard-compatible version of QuickTime Player 7 is also available for use with older media or with existing AppleScript-based workflows. QuickTime Player 7 can be used to playback formats such as QTVR, interactive QuickTime Movies, and MIDI files. Also, it supports QuickTime 7 Pro registration codes for access to QuickTime Pro functionality.

To install the QuickTime Player 7 from the Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard install DVD:

  1. Insert your Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard Install DVD.
  2. Open the Optional Installs folder and double-click “Optional Installs.mpkg”.
  3. Select the QuickTime 7 option and click Continue.
  4. QuickTime Player 7 will be installed in your Utilities folder.

Want to install Snow Leopard, but have no Superdrive :(

For all those who have an Intel Mac with no Superdrive (The AirBook) or simply a broken drive, don’t panic. There are a few way to upgrade. You will need to borrow a friends Superdrive / DVD player first.

1. Buy the Upgrade DVD

2. Find a USB drive that has at least 8.2GB of free space, or an external Hard Drive. If using an External Hard Drive I suggest you partition a 10GB slot for this.

3. Connect the USB Drive or External Hard drive to a Mac with a working Superdrive

4. Open Finder > Applications >  Utilities > Disk Utility

Disk Utility

Disk Utility

5. Insert the Snow Leopard Disk

6. Click the Snow Leopard Disk, choose ‘Restore’ tab, drag the Snow Leopard DVD to the Source box

7. Drag your USB or External Hard Drive to the Destination

8. Hit Restore, sit back and wait.

9. Once the restore is complete, unmount the USB or External Hard Drive, mount it on the Mac with no Superdrive.

10. Open the file image and install Snow Leopard.

What I would not suggest is installing from another Mac over a wireless connection and a shared Superdrive. Yes, someone told me they actually tried it that way…..
